On May 1, 2011, Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-BIG) and the Computer Network Information Center,Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-CNIC) jointly announced the establishment of the Center for Biological Information at ChineseAcademy of Sciences (CAS-CBI). The new Center will set out to establish Sequencing Data Repository (SDR), a facility to store datagenerated from new generations of sequencing platforms including Illumina Genome Analyzer, Roche 454 GS System, Applied BiosystemsSOLiD System, Helicos Heliscope, PacBio RS System, Complete Genomics CGA Platform, and others. With the phased closure of the SRA (SequenceRead Archive) service by National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the U.S., CAS-CBI sees the urgent need to step up the effort to develop SDR to serve the needs for researchers in China and around the world to store, index, share and analyze the next generation sequencing data. Moreover, CAS-CBI is committed to support the development of newer generation sequencing platforms, and will extend SDR's capability to archive data generated in these new platforms including PacBio RS System and Complete Genomics' CGA Platform. The SDR service is scheduled to be in operation by December 2011.
